MUTTON THORAN

Mutton cooked with shallots and coconut. This recipe is from my MIL's kitchen.


Ingredients:
Boneless mutton- 500g, cleaned and cubed as small as possible
Water  - 1 cup 
Salt - 1 tsp
Items A:
Oil - 2 tbsp
Red chilly powder - 1.25 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Garam masala powder - 1 tsp
Ginger garlic paste - 3 tbsp
Items B:
Coconut - 3 tbsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Garlic - 3 cloves
Curry leaves - 1 flake
Items C:
Refined sunflower oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 2 pinches
Broken black urad dhal - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 2 flakes
Red onion / shallots - 25 nos, chopped length-wise
Spring onions - 1 stem finely chopped for seasoning (optional)

Method:
- Heat oil in a non-stick pan, then add items A and saute for a minute
- Add chopped mutton pieces, salt, water into it
- Cover and cook for 15-20 mins so that the mutton gets cooked well and all the water evaporates
- In the meantime, grind Items B in a mixer and keep it aside.
- Now take Items C, heat oil in a deep bottomed frying pan, crackle mustard seeds followed by urad dhal and mix for few seconds. Now add curry leaves and chopped small onions. Saute the onions till they turn translucent. Add the grinded paste into it and fry for 2 minutes
- Then add the cooked mutton into it and mix well. If needed add little bit oil or water and cook for about 4-5 mins in sim flame
- Sprinkle chopped spring onions and serve with boiled rice and Rasam
